Former New York City police captain Eric Adams has been elected the city’s new mayor in a landslide election, raising questions over the stance the official will adopt towards crypto, and whether he will keep the promises he had made during his successful campaign.

The Democrat, who is to take office on January 1 as the second Black mayor of the country’s most populated city, has vowed to implement policies that would reflect the needs of the Big Apple’s working- and middle-class residents.

“Tonight, New York has chosen one of you — one of our own. I am you. I am you,” Adams told his supporters at the victory party in Brooklyn on Tuesday after initial results showed he beat Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, as reported by the Associated Press.

“After years of praying and hoping and struggling and working, we are headed to City Hall,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a speech Adams made last June, the then-candidate also told voters one of his priorities would be to ensure that New York City attracted new technologies and cutting-edge businesses, including crypto-focused companies.

“I’m going to promise you in one year, you’re going to see a different city. We’re going to bring businesses here. We’re going to become the center of life science, the center of cybersecurity, the center of self-driving cars and drones, the center of bitcoins, the center of all the technology,” he said.

Also, referring to Miami’s notoriously pro-crypto Mayor Francis Suarez, Adams said back then: “Miami, you had your run. We’re bringing our businesses back.”

Meanwhile, Suarez, who was seeking a second term as a Republican candidate, has also won his city’s mayoral election in a landslide. Following his win, Suarez announced he would take his next paycheck “100% in bitcoin”.
