DOGS, a memecoin built on The Open Network (TON), released its roadmap for the first half of 2025, outlining plans for DOGS-themed games, community engagement through local philanthropy, and expanded payment use cases for the DOGS token.

According to the roadmap, users will have the option to use their DOGS tokens, which were inspired by a drawing of Telegram founder Pavel Durov’s dog, to make online and offline purchases, such as gift cards and travel bookings, later this year.

Individuals will also be able to register local chapters of nonprofit organizations to facilitate charity work funded through the community’s $4.5 million charity pool of 6 billion unclaimed DOGS tokens.

The DOGS community recently told Cointelegraph that one of its partnerships with charity groups included the Best Friends Animal Society, which houses homeless animals in the United States.

This community outreach work highlights a use case for memecoins, which analysts typically criticize as lacking utility, value, and real-world purpose.

DOGS hits records, causing TON to crash

In September, the TON community announced that the DOGS token was held by 4.5 million unique holders, making it the meme token with the most unique holders ever.

At the time, the TON community noted that “53 million users engaged with the DOGS Mini App, and 42.2 million were eligible for the token airdrop,” making it the largest meme token generation event in history at the time.

The meteoric popularity of the DOGS Telegram Mini App and users flocking to mint DOGS tokens caused TON to cease block production twice.

On Aug. 28, 2024, TON experienced the first DOGS-related outage and ceased producing blocks for several hours due to unusually high network congestion from onchain users claiming DOGS tokens during the airdrop.

The second outage occurred one day later on Aug. 29 and lasted approximately 6 hours before block production resumed.

TON experienced a total of 12 hours of downtime within a 36-hour period due to the high volume of users claiming the memecoin.
