Airbnb host: Come for the stay, leave with $100k in crypto

An Airbnb host has added an unusual new rule after discovering her guests had been mining crypto at her property.

The host, Ashley, shared on TikTok that her guests left the house in great condition and even received a five-star review. However, she was shocked to receive a $1,500 electricity bill.

Upon reviewing footage from her external security cameras, Ashley noticed the guests had brought in over ten computer rigs and set up a makeshift electric vehicle charging station.

After contacting the guests and providing evidence, they admitted to mining crypto during their three-week stay, reportedly earning over $100,000.

No more crypto mining!

Ashley initially struggled to get the guests to cover the bill, but Airbnb intervened, ensuring payment was made. Following the incident, she added “no crypto-mining” and “no electric vehicle charging” to her house rules.

Other Airbnb hosts have reportedly implemented similar measures in response to the energy-intensive nature of cryptocurrency mining, which is known to be a significant drain on electricity resources.

“It was cheaper for them to rent a house than to pay for that electricity,” said Ashley in her TikTok.
